How To Care For Natural Hair Extensions

If you're thinking about getting natural hair extensions for your hair, you may want to know how to care for them beforehand. It isn't the same as caring for your own natural hair. You have to be a little more gentle with natural hair extensions in order to keep them from looking washed out or frizzy. See below for care instructions for natural hair extensions.

Brush

Brush your hair before going to bed and before washing it. This way you get rid of any tangles and knots before they get worse. Use a wooden paddle brush to help prevent frizzing and pulling. Be sure not to brush your hair when it is wet, as this can cause damage to the hair follicles.

Wash

When washing your extensions, use a sulfate-free shampoo. You can look for this type of shampoo at most beauty supply stores. Sulfate can wash out the natural oils in your hair and can dry out your hair. Try to only wash your hair only 2-3 times per week (so as to not dry out extensions). Also only wash your hair in warm water, not hot water, as this can also dry out your scalp and hair. When rinsing out your shampoo, use cold water to help close your hair cuticles and help your hair hold in moisture. Be sure not to scrub, as this can cause friction among extensions and can cause frizz. After shampooing, use a natural oil such as almond or coconut oil to restore shine and moisture to your hair. Conditioner has added chemicals, but natural oils condition your hair without those added chemicals.

Drying

Heat can cause frizz and dry out your extensions. Always allow your hair to air dry instead. This may take awhile, depending on how long and thick your hair is, so allow enough time for this in your daily routine.

See Your Stylist

Go in often to see your stylist to have your bonding checked to prevent them from falling out. Your stylist can have new extensions bonded in when needed. Talk to your stylist about other things you can do to keep your extensions from getting frizzy or dried out, such as keeping your hair braided or in a low bun when swimming in the summer to prevent knots and tangles while swimming.

Caring for natural hair extensions is not too difficult, but it can add to your normal daily routine. Be sure to take this into account before getting your extensions. Contact a business, such as Alaska Dollar Market & Beauty Supply, for more information.
